Abstract

As a result of recent technical developments the various phenomena surrounding us can be studied more and more effectively since more accurate and detailed information is available for experts. Thereby more remarkable progress can be made in those fields which used to be less accented before.
Surface waviness is becoming a more effective tool for studying components of machines, the operation of machinery, especially after it has been completed with 3D measurement and evaluation techniques.
In this work the evolution of waviness, its function in quality control and scientific research are reviewed. We relate to the opportunities and investigation methods of 3D surface roughness measurements. We also survey how the 2D waviness parameters can be extended to 3D microtopographies.
