Abstract

Mathematics subjects are important parts of informatics students’ Bsc instruction. However the fulfillment of the subject requirements needs the basic knowledge and ability of primary and high school Maths, furthermore adequate abstract thinking, which students often lack. Their schemata[1] are fragmentary, false or simply do not exist. Therefore the methods of the conventional teaching are almost completely inefficient for them. What can be done in higher education to improve the efficiency of Maths instruction?
We started some experimental groups at the John von Neumann Faculty of University of Óbuda, in which a computer algebra system was applied for representation and for problem solving. Our aim was to find out, how this method effects on students’ understanding concepts, their problem solving and attitude with regard to mathematics.
